Managing difficult life transitions

You have experienced a major change in your life that has been harder to get used to than you thought it would. You have already tried different things to help you cope, and maybe already tried counseling.

You are still having trouble adjusting to a new way of life and are feeling overwhelmed, overworked, and stressed out.

You think to yourself that you should be able to handle it all and that you should have gotten over it by now. The truth is you feel like you’re hanging on by a thread.

Some examples of life transitions and life stages:

  • Child leaving for college

  • Relocation

  • Retirement

  • Serious illness

  • Significant loss (of a person, job, pet, or anything important)

  • Starting a career

  • Accidents

  • Buying/selling a house

  • Changing jobs

  • Divorce

  • Getting married

  • Having a baby

  • Going to college

The list can go on. Life transitions can be positive or negative, planned or unexpected. Either way, you are finding it harder than you expected to get through the transition.

You are strong. You also notice you have been feeling and acting in ways that are not your usual self. You feel short-tempered, you are not connecting with others as you used to, everything just feels like too much to handle.

What you want is to feel the confidence that you have everything under control. You want to figure out how to manage these overwhelming feelings, and know that you can make it through.

Most importantly, you want to feel yourself again.

With the help of therapy it is possible to manage all those unwanted feelings, know that you can pull through, and on the other side is that joy you’ve been missing. You can learn to navigate these new changes and come out on top!
